Loco Motive

I never did like Thomas the Tank Engine. I mean, the train has a face! And not any ordinary face. It's a face of... pure Satanic evil.

GlennzTees (in association with Austin-based Despair, Inc) showcased a perfect example of Thomas in the throes of his bloodlust.

And no, my hatred for Thomas the Tank Engine has nothing to do with the accidental death of my great-great-granduncle who was killed building the tracks.

What I Got - Plastered

There's a cultural shift in China. In the past you have dissenting citizens, tacked under the imperial thumb of the Chinese government. Now with the Internet, boom! You have an explosion of information and creativity.

Since this is China, I'll be remiss if I didn't mention that there is also a big t-shirt boom. Of course, the bulk of it are communist-themed t-shirts but recently, the trend seems to be shifting away from that.

Plastered T-shirts is a store in Beijing that sell t-shirts about China culture with a kitschy twist. Operated by a British-Canadian couple, you find items ranging from buttons to apparel displaying designs of everyday visuals like a train ticket or a beer bottle. Last year, they had a fashion show to kick off new Olympic-inspired designs.

I received two t-shirts from Plastered and as you can see are...

... a three-wheel motorcycle...

... and a flask. I assume, it's Chinese for "flask."

The apparel is thick. And check out the stitching around the arm...

... and around the collar.

The designs are not screen printed. They looked like iron-ons.

I can't attest to how long the designs can last (disclaimer: I've gotten several other t-shirts from China and they also utilized the same method of printing) but they have very pretty designs.

Magical Mystery

I dare you to play "I am the Walrus" as you wear this t-shirt in front of a mirror. And if you're feelin' ballsy enough, I double dare you to play the song backwards.

There are more psychedelic designs at Spectral Apparel. I heard if you lick the t-shirt you can taste time itself.

Biker Nice

Disclosure: I'm doing my masters at the University of Texas at Austin and the kids here have bicycle fever. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one of them speed demons on two wheels.

Yep. The kids at UT are environmentally-conscious. Always riding in a pack (or is it a gaggle?) to classes or work. Can you imagine if they rally together, maybe for a race. They dress up in their little biking outfits, a swarm of gay-colored cyclists coming down the hill.

The website You Never Bike Alone (that is actually a documentary of the bicycle craze in Vancouver) has this tee that is a constant reminder that nobody ever rides solo when it comes to saving the environment.

Rime Time

I don't know about you but I had a wild night of New Year celebrations involving food, singing, trying to hit on a girl at a party and sleeping till the late afternoon. What a great start to the new year. Speaking of great starts, Kindred Clothiers, presented a preview of their new line up due out this month.

I'm eagerly awaiting The Rime of the Ancient Mariner tee because it enforces my belief that all albatrosses are better when they are alive, flying and pooping on the ship's deck.

Monies: US$24.95

Note: According to their webpage, they have a holiday special code "cousineddie" for US$5 off. I'm not sure if it's still in effect.

You've Sunk Mah Battleship!

Not much is known about Lucha Workshop but they have really beautiful designs like the battleship t-shirt. None of that vector shit, we're talking about old school pencil sketching. Look at the raw intensity of it... that's just beautiful.

It's hand-screened with water based ink on an American Apparel.

Son of Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo

This post is sucky. Thought I revisit the F-Bomb.

Found more F-bomb themed shirts. We have one from Sharp Shirter. I like the way the bomb falls in an arc. It's printed on a JerzeesĀ® Heavyweight 50/50 tee.

Here's another one from a reader, from Alternative Motive.

Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo

We see way too many t-shirts with skulls and guns but I've found another theme that is often repeated. It's the F-bomb, one of the many "how to hoodwink the Puritanic public by display naughty language in a seemingly innocent design."

Let's examine its multitudinous incarnations, shall we?

This one, the "F-Bomb tee," was conceived by Scott Ramsoomair, creator of VG Cats. A yellow stenciled bomb printed on an olive shirt, simple color scheme and simplicity is a way to go.

It retails for US$16.95.

Here's one by Thread Pit called "Let's Drop the F-Bomb." This has a lot more detail to it. Flying bombers and the copious bomb dropping kinda reminds me of the time a flock of pigeons with diarrhea flew over me but that's a tale for another time.

The shirt retails for US$15.

Dumbgun, a more political than pop culture site, has the "F Bomb" falling vertically instead of horizontally. They offer you a choice of either a short-sleeved shirt or a long-sleeved shirt.

The prices are respectively, US$16.95 and US$24.95.

Positive Brand, which also specializes in comic book retail, also took the road Dumbgun had traveled. The F-Bomb tee has a clean design that I really like. Somehow this design, with the stars in the background reminds me part of the Star Spangled Banner.

"... the bombs bursting in air."

I hope it's not a Freudian thing. Man, I hate it when that happens.

It costs US$20.

Here's another shirt that capitalizes on the previous two designs, this time, on the back of the shirt, it's a missile. And the weird part, the sentence underneath it reads, "Drop the Bomb." Whu-huh? And how does one drop it when it appears to be firing straight up? Is it a puzzle I must solve?

I dig the cartoonish image of it but the design at the back of the shirt just threw me off. But I'm nit-picking. According to the website, there are new shirts coming out, this time with physics-possible bomb-dropping design.

The shirt comes from FBomb Clothing and retails for US$12.95. It only comes in L-XXL.

F'n Angry Shirts, a site that caters to the seriously pissed-off, decided to take a different approach. Instead of designing it as a warhead, they decided to go with the classic-looking that hearkens to the silent movie villain, fiendishly twisting his evil mustache while brandishing a cannonball-like bomb, the fuse ever so burning. Called the F Bomb!!, the shirt is printed on an Anvil Ringer.

Sizes only range from L-XXL. It costs US$21.

Now there's a t-shirt from Cafepress... nah, really. Why bother?

Divine Wind

"In the Japanese language, kamikaze, usually translated as "divine wind" (kami is the word for "god", "spirit", or "divinity"; and kaze for "wind"), came into being as the name of a legendary typhoon said to have saved Japan from a Mongol invasion fleet in 1281."
Wikipedia.org

The Divine Wind is printed in platisol inks on a military olive tee. The shop, GM Tee sells Asian-themed tees and is located in Hong Kong and they ship worldwide.
